A 42-year-old man is being tried at the Faro Court for alleged aggravated child sexual abuse crimes committed against his two minor children. The defendant had been in preventive detention since February last year and the trial began in December.
The man was released on June 26, after the court ordered the replacement of the precautionary measure. Preventive detention was replaced by periodic appearances before authorities, prohibition of contact with the minors, and prohibition from leaving the country.
The alleged crimes are believed to have been committed between April 2023 and July 2024, after the separation of the defendant and the children's mother. According to the Judicial Police, which conducted the investigation, the abuse occurred in an environment controlled by the suspect, mainly inside his home, during the children's visits. The PJ stated having collected evidence, including reports from one of the minors about the episodes of sexual assault.
The trial, which resumes in October, is being held behind closed doors by decision of the panel of judges.
