The Portimão-Lagoa 2027 Mediterranean Beach Games were presented in Taranto, Italy, during the Mediterranean Games currently taking place in that city. The event will take place between September 11 and 18, 2027, will include 14 sports and will have sustainability as one of its main flags. The executive director of the organizing committee, Pedro Farromba, anticipated "a great year for Portugal and for these localities" and revealed the first outline of the sports programme.
Rocha Beach, in Portimão, will host beach football, beach tennis, triathlon, rowing (beach sprint), sailing (kitesurf and iQFoil), 3×3 basketball and padel, also receiving the main stadium with capacity for 2,500 spectators and the Opening Ceremony. On the other side of the Arade River, at Lagoa's Grande Beach, beach volleyball, beach handball, sea kayaking, open water swimming and wrestling will take place. The expected 800 to 900 athletes will be distributed across 11 hotels, being able to walk to the venues.
As a symbol of the Games, a lighthouse inspired by the Ferragudo Lighthouse was chosen, representing "the light that connects all people who sail the sea". The countdown to the Games begins on September 18, with triathlete João Pereira traveling by land from Taranto to the Algarve municipalities, collecting seawater from Olympic committees in Italy, San Marino and Spain. Sailor José Costa will undertake a maritime journey from Morocco.
The Secretary-General of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games, Iakovos Filippousis, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the organization, noting that the municipalities and the Portuguese Olympic Committee are "very advanced and prepared" to present "the best Games ever", with the mission of promoting Mediterranean values and promoting peace in the region.
