Frozen eggs: footballers play overtime for motherhood

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General2 September 2026 at 14:34

The Spanish Football Federation is finalizing an agreement with an assisted reproduction clinic to make it easier for national team players to freeze their eggs, if they wish. This initiative comes in a context where football has been the catalyst for important debates on specifically feminine issues, such as sexual consent, following the case of the unwanted kiss by Luis Rubiales to Jenni Hermoso.

Elite female athletes reach their optimal performance level during their most fertile years, generally up to age 35. This temporal coincidence between a professional career and the reproductive period puts women athletes in a difficult situation of reconciling motherhood and sporting life.

Preserving gametes through egg freezing allows players to increase their options for becoming mothers when their career declines, offering them greater freedom to decide about their reproductive future. Paying attention to the specific imperatives of women regarding reproductive health and putting options within their reach represents a significant advance for women's rights in professional sport.
