Solidarity with Nepal. Initiative is by chef Tank Sapkota

RTP Notícias2 September 2026 at 14:20

Four restaurants in Lisbon promoted a solidarity dinner to support the populations affected by the tragedy in Nepal and Tibet. The initiative aimed to raise funds to help the communities that suffered from the devastating effects of the disaster.

The solidarity action was devised by Nepalese chef Tanka Sapkota, a native of Nepal. The cook decided to mobilize the Lisbon gastronomic community for awareness and the raising of humanitarian support.

The event featured the participation of four dining establishments in the Portuguese capital. The restaurants offered meals whose profits were reverted in favor of the victims of the tragedy that hit both regions.

EU with broad consensus to adopt "very demanding" sanctions against Russia

EU Foreign Ministers have reached a broad consensus to adopt a new "very demanding" sanctions package against Russia, which could be approved in October. According to Portuguese minister Paulo Rangel, the package essentially targets over a thousand individuals and companies, being considered the most ambitious ever, focusing on the Russian military complex and potentially affecting around 1,600 individuals and entities. Rangel argued that these targeted sanctions have proven to be the most effective, directly impacting the lives of Russian decision-makers. The EU's chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, had already indicated it would be the "most ambitious package ever". The informal meeting in Wicklow, Ireland, takes place at a time of strong tension, after Germany held Moscow responsible for a drone attack attempt at Leipzig airport.

Prevention is better: governing climate risk well

The EIOPA warned that climate change is transforming regions of Europe into a challenge for the insurance sector, in a development that integrates climate risks into European prudential supervision. In Portugal, the Report of the Independent Technical Commission on the 2025 fires documented 8,256 rural fires and 271,587 hectares burned, including the Piódão fire as the largest recorded in the country. The report identifies structural weaknesses in fuel management, land preparation and operational response, presenting 20 recommendations to strengthen prevention, coordination and institutional capacity. The article argues that climate risk governance requires an integrated, prospective approach based on the articulation between science, data, experience and expert judgment, transforming prevention into an investment in reducing future losses.
