Ukrainian authorities informed the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) that Russian airspace is no longer safe, in a formal communication about the risks created by Ukrainian military drones. The alert follows the attacks carried out by Kyiv against Russian targets using these unmanned aircraft.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, had already warned on Tuesday, in his daily address, that the Russian sky was becoming "extremely dangerous" due to the use of Ukrainian drones. This statement served as a precursor to the official communication sent to ICAO by the authorities in Kyiv.
The central issue concerns the safety of international civil aviation, since drone attacks on Russian territory may pose dangers to commercial flights crossing adjacent areas or even to routes passing through Russian airspace, should this be affected by these military operations.
This communication to the international body likely aims to alert the global aviation community to the increased risks in the region and possibly pressure Moscow through international instances, at a time when Ukrainian drone attacks have intensified against military targets and energy infrastructure in Russia.
