Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel stated that there is a "fairly consensual understanding" among the European Union member states to move forward with a new "very demanding" sanctions package against Russia. The statements were made at the end of the informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Wicklow, Ireland.
The sanctions package essentially targets individuals and companies, potentially covering more than a thousand people. Paulo Rangel considered that these targeted sanctions have proven to be the most effective, as they have an impact on the lives of decision-makers in the Russian Federation, leading them to a more difficult situation and forcing them to reconsider their position.
The EU's chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, indicated in August that she would present the "most ambitious package ever" against Russia, which could target around 1,600 individuals and entities from the Russian military complex. The package is expected to be presented at the Foreign Affairs Council in October, representing the 22nd sanctions package.
The informal meeting in Wicklow takes place at a time of strong tension with Russia, after the German government held Moscow responsible for the attack attempt at Leipzig airport on August 4, using a drone loaded with explosives. Paulo Rangel acknowledged that when packages include measures related to specific economic sectors, it is normal for there to always be "one state, two or three" with reservations.
