Man arrested after impersonating coach Luís Castro to scam Grêmio players

oglobo2 September 2026 at 13:39

A scammer was arrested on Wednesday during Operation Falso 9, carried out by the civil police of Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul. The criminal used fake profiles on messaging apps to impersonate football coaches and scam professional athletes.

The investigation began after four players from a club in Porto Alegre were approached by the same phone number. According to the newspaper Zero Hora, the athletes were from Grêmio. The line was registered under a third party's name and used the image of Luís Castro, the team's coach, as the profile picture.

According to police, the criminal first established a trust relationship with the athletes before making any financial requests. He also asked that conversations be kept secret, a strategy used to prevent the victim from consulting others and realizing the fraud.

In one of the cases, the scammer conversed with forward Enam.
