The tension between Russia and Germany intensified after Dmitri Medvedev, Vice-President of the Russian Security Council, threatened to attack German military factories. Medvedev publicly stated that these facilities "deserve a direct attack", directly pointing the finger at Berlin in his statements.
The threats come one day after the German Government formally held Russia responsible for the attempted attack with an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig/Halle airport, which occurred on August 4. German authorities directly accuse Moscow of being behind this attempted attack on German territory.
This exchange of accusations represents a significant escalation of bilateral relations between the two countries, at a time when German support for Ukraine has been a constant source of tension between Russia and Western NATO members. Medvedev's threats come in the broader context of the conflict in Ukraine and the military support that several European countries have been providing to Kyiv.
