From Évora to Sines: Alentejo opens three new variants and doubles section of the IP8

Alentrium2 September 2026 at 12:37

Alentejo concentrates four of the five last major road interventions completed by Infraestruturas de Portugal under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, with a joint investment close to 179 million euros. The works include three new variants — in Évora, Beringel and Figueira de Cavaleiros — and the doubling of a section of the IP8 between Relvas Verdes and Roncão, all opened to traffic on the past 31st of August.

The Eastern Évora Variant, worth 54.9 million euros, is the highest-value road contract executed by Infraestruturas de Portugal under the PRR framework. With approximately 12.8 kilometres of new road, it establishes a connection between the Évora Nascente Node of the A6/IP7 and the IP2, in São Manços, featuring two lanes in each direction and including 13 engineering structures along the route.

The remaining Alentejo interventions cover the Beringel Variant, with 33.6 million euros and 22.5 kilometres integrated into the improvement of the IP8/EN121 between Ferreira do Alentejo and Beja, and the Figueira de Cavaleiros Variant, with 30.9 million euros and 22 kilometres in the section between Santa Margarida do Sado and Ferreira do Alentejo. Added to these is the doubling of the IP8 between Relvas Verdes and Roncão, with an investment of approximately 45 million euros that reinforces the connection between Sines and the A2 with two lanes in each direction over approximately 15 kilometres.

With the completion of these five projects, Infraestruturas de Portugal reached 154 kilometres of roads built or requalified under the PRR road target, surpassing the 111 kilometres set as the goal. The company has already received 508 million euros in European Union funds for PRR investments, corresponding to 94% of available financing. The fifth intervention of this set is located outside Alentejo, on the Variant to EN211 between Quintã and Mesquinhata, in the North of the country.

Inflation fears continue to pressure sovereign debt for the second consecutive day

Inflation fears continue to pressure sovereign debt for the second consecutive day, with yields hitting multi-year highs in several countries. In Germany, ten-year bunds reached 3.375% (highest since 2011), ten-year Japanese bonds remained above 3% for the first time in 31 years, US Treasury bonds remained above 4.8%, and ten-year British gilts renewed 2008 highs at 5.294%. In Portugal, ten-year bonds reached 3.747%, setting new highs since 2023, although the country benefits from debt reduction and fiscal correction. The renewed conflict in the Middle East, with new exchanges of fire between Americans and Iranians in Hormuz, should worsen inflation and lead Western central banks to new rate hikes.

Rockport opens first physical store in Portugal at Almada Forum

The American footwear brand Rockport opened its first physical store in Portugal, at Almada Forum in Lisbon, marking a new phase in its expansion strategy in the national market. The opening comes after the brand's return to Portugal in December 2025, initially only through the online store. Rockport plans to open two more stores in Lisbon, at Amoreiras Shopping Center and Avenida da Igreja in Alvalade. Among the priorities is the resumption of production in Portugal of some models of the brand, recovering a historical connection to the national footwear industry and valuing Portuguese know-how. The Portuguese operation also features a digital platform based on artificial intelligence for inventory management, demand analysis, and personalized shopping experience. Founded in 1971 in the United States, the brand has been present in Portugal since the early 1990s.
