Brussels sees State participation in REN as reinforcement of energy security

Brussels considered that the participation of the Portuguese State in REN (Redes Energéticas Nacionais) represents a reinforcement of Portugal's energy security. The European Commission expressed a favorable position regarding the Portuguese government's decision to return to the capital of the electricity grid company.

Maria da Graça Carvalho, Minister for European Affairs, revealed that the European Commission "accepted well" Portugal's decision. The Portuguese executive proceeded with the acquisition of 13.7% of REN, marking the State's return to the capital of the electricity grid company.

This decision is part of a broader strategy to reinforce the State's presence in strategic sectors of energy. The state participation in REN aims to guarantee greater control over critical infrastructures of the national electricity sector.

Brussels' position regarding this operation is relevant for the assessment process that is underway. The European Commission recognizes the merit of the Portuguese initiative in the context of European energy security.
