Beach season totals 22 deaths in Portugal, including cases in the Algarve

The National Maritime Authority recorded 22 deaths on Portuguese beaches during the beach season from May 1 to August 31, a period that also included 1,285 rescues and 2,359 first aid actions. Of the recorded deaths, 12 resulted from drowning and nine from sudden illness, with one death of unknown cause.

Of the four cases with fatalities in August, three were caused by sudden illness. The drowning deaths were distributed across lifeguarded and non-lifeguarded beaches, including Peneco and São Rafael beaches in Albufeira, while deaths from sudden illness occurred on beaches such as California in Sesimbra, Pedrinhas in Esposende, and Figueirinha in Setúbal.

Non-lifeguarded maritime beaches recorded several fatal accidents, including occurrences at Lagoa de Albufeira Interior, in Azenhas do Guadiana in Mértola, at Ilha Morraceira de Lanhelas in Caminha, at Porto Dinheiro in Peniche, at Cabeço in Vila Real de Santo António, and at São Torpes Sul in Sines. Deaths were also recorded on beaches outside the beach season and without surveillance, such as Molhe Leste in Peniche and Dragão Vermelho in Almada.

The AMN also reported a missing swimmer since August 28 at Praia da Ursa, in the municipality of Sintra, district of Lisbon.
