Case Odair Moniz: PSP agent who killed cook in Cova da Moura also appeals and wants acquittal

Expresso2 September 2026 at 08:00

PSP agent Bruno Pinto appealed the sentence that sentenced him to 17 years in prison for the homicide of Odair Moniz, a 43-year-old cook killed in December 2021 in Cova da Moura, requesting his acquittal. The appeal comes after the Public Prosecutor's Office appealed the acquittal of another agent, Fernando Santos, who was acquitted of all charges.

Bruno Pinto claims he attempted a peaceful approach based on dialogue and that the victim resisted the police intervention, adopting aggressive behavior against the two agents. The defense lawyer argues there was no intent to kill, but rather a defensive reaction proportional to Odair Moniz's aggressiveness.

The case occurred in a neighborhood described as a "sensitive area," which the defense considers relevant to understanding the context of the police intervention. The facts allegedly began with an approach to Odair Moniz related to an alleged complaint from Vizela, in the district of Braga.

The other agent, Fernando Santos, was acquitted by the Loures Court, with the Public Prosecutor's Office having appealed that decision. The case thus continues to generate controversy, with both parties contesting the judicial decision.
