CIMPOR intends to replace fossil fuels with waste and shredded tires at its factory in Souselas, in Vila Nova de Câmera. The company is studying the technical and environmental viability of this industrial co-incineration project, which would allow the use of alternative materials as an energy source in the cement manufacturing process.
The project was submitted for public consultation, during which it received a critical opinion from the environmental organization ZERO. This association expressed opposition to the initiative, warning about potential negative environmental impacts from burning waste as fuel.
Citizens' positions during the public consultation were divided. While some supported the project, others expressed concerns similar to those of ZERO, generating a debate about the risks and benefits of this change in the factory's production processes.
The project now awaits a decision on its environmental viability from APA, the Portuguese Environment Agency, which will have the final say on the implementation of this change in the energy matrix of the manufacturing facility.
