Carolina Freitas Nunes, a 47-year-old neuropsychologist, was detained for 15 days in Bali, Indonesia, after local authorities found 50 ammunition rounds forgotten in her backpack. The situation placed her facing the probability of being sentenced to death, which led her to spend almost two weeks in detention.
The woman was ultimately deported and her case became public. Carolina is a member of a shooting federation, which explains the presence of the ammunition in her luggage, although these had not been declared at the time of travel.
After returning to Portugal, Carolina Freitas Nunes decided to portray the experience in a literary work, currently writing a book about what happened. The case draws attention to the risks that travelers face when they do not carefully check the contents of their bags before crossing international borders.
