As of this Tuesday, France begins applying a tax on ultra-fast fashion products, in a measure aimed especially at platforms such as Shein, Temu and AliExpress. This tax can reach up to 20 euros per item, according to the approved legislation.
The measure comes following the definitive approval, at the end of June, of French legislation aimed at reducing the environmental impact of the textile industry. The law was subsequently promulgated on July 8.
According to Mathieu Lefèvre, the minister delegate responsible for Ecological Transition, the negative impacts of ultra-fast fashion on the environment and economy are known and documented.
According to the South China Morning Post, the legislation establishes a progressive taxation mechanism aimed at economically penalizing the business model based on mass production and very low prices.
