Alto Alentejo Candidates 9.4 Million to Portugal 2030 for Water and Sanitation Network Renewal

Alentrium1 September 2026 at 16:00

Águas do Alto Alentejo submitted to Portugal 2030, between January and August 2026, applications worth approximately 9.4 million euros to create, renew and modernize networks, equipment and infrastructure for water supply and sanitation in ten municipalities in the Portalegre district. The municipalities covered are Alter do Chão, Arronches, Castelo de Vide, Crato, Fronteira, Gavião, Marvão, Nisa, Ponte de Sor and Sousel.

According to the intermunicipal company, since 2022 investments exceeding 11 million euros have been made in the systems under its responsibility. The new applications continue this investment and come after a meeting in May at the Coordination Commission for Regional Development of Alentejo to analyze the investment plan and possible inclusion in community financing instruments.

The AAA also has a water efficiency project under execution, initiated at the end of 2024, with a planned investment of approximately six million euros over eight years. This intervention includes the installation of new measurement and control equipment, creation of monitoring zones, installation of pressure reducing valves, replacement of obsolete meters and reinforcement of telemanagement systems.

According to the company's data, the measures implemented since 2022 have allowed reducing non-revenue water by approximately 18%, which corresponds to estimated savings of approximately 414 thousand cubic meters. During this period, approximately 32 thousand obsolete meters were replaced and more than 800 bursts were identified and repaired. The General Director of Águas do Alto Alentejo, Rui Choças, frames these interventions within a strategy of continued investment intended to prepare the systems for future water management challenges.
