Orlando Feels the Gas Price Spike: August Ends with Price Above $4

Nossa Gente1 September 2026 at 12:32

In August 2026, the national average price of gasoline in the United States remained above $4 per gallon for every day of the month for the first time in history. On the 31st, the last day of the month, the average reached $4.08 per gallon, representing a significant increase compared to $3.18 recorded during the same period last year. The month even surpassed the former record from 2022, when the monthly average had been $3.97 per gallon.

Drivers in Orlando and throughout Florida follow the price escalation with concern, as the automobile is the main means of transportation for a large portion of the population. The impact is especially felt by workers who travel long distances daily and by thousands of families who face yet another pressure on their monthly budget. The city, one of the most visited in the United States, also has intense circulation of tourists and vehicles, and the increase may affect businesses and services linked to the tourism sector.

Among the main factors for the increase are the rise in oil prices on the international market and tensions involving the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most strategic regions for worldwide oil transportation. Brent crude surpassed $90 per barrel, while the benchmark oil in the United States was trading above $86 per barrel.

The American government is seeking alternatives to increase oil supply, including an agreement involving Venezuela's petroleum reserves. However, experts warn that any significant reduction in prices may take time, as the recovery of Venezuelan production would require substantial investments and improvements in the country's infrastructure. Meanwhile, residents of Orlando and Florida continue to monitor prices at the pumps, with the expectation that an eventual drop in oil prices could bring some relief in the coming months.
