Ponte de Lima Substation Strengthens National Electrical Grid Capacity and Security

Alto Minho TV1 September 2026 at 11:53

Ponte de Lima hosts a new electrical Substation built by REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais, located in the parishes of Navió and Vitorino de Piães, Cabaços and Fojo Lobal, and Friastelas. The infrastructure has been in service since December 5, 2025, and aims to strengthen the capacity, security, and reliability of the electrical grid in Northern Portugal.

The new substation constitutes a fundamental component of the 400 kV electrical interconnection between Portugal and Spain. The project contributes to increasing the capacity for energy exchange between the two countries and to greater integration of production from renewable sources, preparing the energy system for the challenges of the energy transition.

The total investment in the Ponte de Lima Substation was 26 million euros, representing part of a Portuguese investment exceeding 70 million euros associated with the new electrical interconnection with Spain. The project was developed over approximately three years.

The municipality of Ponte de Lima considers this infrastructure a reference for strengthening the national electrical grid and for the strategic valorization of the territory, contributing to a more robust, interconnected, and future-ready energy system.
