The Central Bank extended from 30 to 80 days the deadline to contest fraudulent refunds made through MED (Special Refund Mechanism). The change aims to protect merchants from a scam that made them lose money twice.
With the previous scam, fraudsters bought from merchants using Pix and then requested the refund directly from the bank, even without being entitled to it. The merchant lost the sale amount and the product, while the refund went to the criminal's account.
The new rule allows merchants to have more time to present disputes when they identify fraud, increasing the security of commercial transactions made through Pix.
The measure is part of a set of actions by the Central Bank to strengthen protection in the instant payments system and reduce vulnerabilities exploited by financial scams.
