In August 2026, the year-on-year rate of change of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Portugal increased to 3.3%, representing an addition of 0.3 percentage points compared to the previous month. This growth was predominantly driven by the rise in fuel prices. The underlying inflation index, which excludes unprocessed food products and energy, recorded a change of 2.7%, also 0.1 percentage points higher than July's rate.
The data reveal that the energy products index surged to 12.2%, a significant increase compared to the 8.7% recorded in July. In the opposite direction, the index for unprocessed food products showed a slight decline, falling from 3.7% in July to 3.4% in August. Compared to the previous month, the CPI change was 0.1%, contrasting with the negative changes observed in July and August 2025, which were -0.5% and -0.2%, respectively.
The average accumulated change over the last twelve months was estimated at 2.7%, slightly higher than the 2.6% recorded in July. Additionally, Portugal's Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) showed a year-on-year change of 3.6%, compared to 3.1% in July. The final data on August's CPI will be released on 10 September.
