Home will weigh even heavier on family budgets

Jornal de Negócios31 August 2026 at 23:30

Variable rate mortgage payments are set to rise again in September, increasing the financial pressure on Portuguese families with mortgages. Euribor futures currently show no relief expected throughout the coming year, meaning borrowers will continue to face higher payments in the near future.

This situation directly affects homeowners with Euribor-indexed mortgages, who have already been absorbing successive increases in their monthly payments. The absence of signals indicating a drop in Euribor rates within the expected timeframe further worsens the outlook for these households.

In the case of tenants, the article indicates that 2027 should bring additional housing rental costs. Thus, both those who own homes with financing and those living in rented accommodation will face a worsening of housing expenses in the coming years.
