Alcolumbre wants to vote on Rodrigo Pacheco's appointment to TCU this week

cbn31 August 2026 at 20:10

With the resignation of Minister Bruno Dantas, the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre, intends to vote this week on the appointment of Senator Rodrigo Pacheco to the Court of Accounts (TCU). The analysis in plenary, however, depends on the in-person quorum of senators.

This Monday (31), Dantas formalized his departure from the TCU. According to official procedure, President Vital do Rêgo is expected to inform the Senate about the vacancy on that same day. In the letter delivered to formalize his departure, Dantas thanked his colleagues at the Court and the period when he was president of the institution, in addition to stating his belief in rotation for high-level positions.

Alcolumbre's intention is to vote on the appointment during the concentrated effort week and avoid leaving the matter for after the elections. The president of the Senate is seeking speed in the process of filling the vacancy.

Pacheco's appointment comes months after a rift established between Presidents Lula and Alcolumbre regarding the appointment of Jorge Messias for a vacancy on the Supreme Federal Court (STF). The executive chief's choice had caused friction between the two heads of branches of government.

Government reserves R$ 44.8 billion for parliamentary amendments in 2027

The Lula government reserved R$ 44.8 billion for parliamentary amendments in the 2027 Annual Budget Bill (PLOA), an increase of R$ 4 billion compared to the proposal for 2026. The amount is expected to be higher after Congressional approval, since in 2026, R$ 40.8 billion was reserved, but the approved amount reached R$ 50 billion. Mandatory amendments are those the government is obligated to pay, while non-mandatory ones depend on available space in the Budget. There are three types of amendments: individual, from state delegations, and from committees, each with its own rules for distribution and application.
