The Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and Embrapii (Brazilian Company for Industrial Research and Innovation) announced on Monday (31st) the creation of the Embrapii Center of Competence in RNA Therapies and Vaccines, which will operate at BH-TEC, in Belo Horizonte. The project has an investment of R$ 60 million over the next four years and will focus on the development of new applications of RNA technology in the health area.

RNA technology, which was fundamental in the development of vaccines against Covid-19, will be the central object of research of the new center. Among the first studies is the development of an RNA vaccine that, according to those responsible for the center, represents a technology still unprecedented in the world.

In addition to vaccine production, the structure will also research the use of RNA in treatments against cancer and other diseases. The coordination of the center is in charge of Santuza Teixeira, a professor at UFMG, who explained that positive results of phase 3 clinical studies of an RNA vaccine were recently published.

Scientists from Coimbra discover lymphatic vessels in bones and rewrite anatomy

Scientists from the Institute of Research at the University of Coimbra, integrated in the MIA-Portugal consortium, made a pioneering discovery by identifying lymphatic vessels in bones, a finding that rewrites human anatomy textbooks. The study, published in the prestigious journal Cell, demonstrates that the lymphatic network is not only a drainage system, but plays an active role in bone regeneration. This discovery opens new therapeutic possibilities to combat bone aging and diseases associated with bone mass loss, representing a significant advance for regenerative medicine.

Traces of ancient streams reveal extreme episodes in Serra da Estrela

The Serra da Estrela Interpretation Center (CISE) has highlighted the existence of traces of ancient flash flood and torrent episodes in Serra da Estrela, documented through fluvioglacial deposits identified in the Alvoco and Beijames streams, as well as in the Zêzere river. These deposits testify to extreme events that occurred in the region throughout its geological history.

After all, how many hours of sleep should you get? The 8 hours may not be the answer

A new scientific study questions the traditional recommendation of eight hours of sleep per night, suggesting that the ideal duration may vary from person to person. The research relates sleep hours to biological aging and points to a specific range that may have a significant impact on health and longevity, challenging the generalized idea that eight hours is the universal standard for adequate rest.
