Scientists from the University of Coimbra identified for the first time the existence of lymphatic vessels inside bones, a discovery that challenges centuries of established anatomical knowledge. This finding, considered revolutionary in the field of medicine, was made by the MIA-Portugal team (Microenvironment, Immunity and Angiogenesis).
The study, now published in the prestigious scientific journal Cell, demonstrates that the lymphatic network is not just a passive drainage structure, but plays an active role in bone regeneration. The researchers proved that these lymphatic vessels are directly involved in the repair and maintenance processes of bone tissue throughout life.
The Coimbra team was able to visualize and characterize these intraosseous lymphatic vessels through advanced imaging techniques and cellular analysis, confirming their presence and functionality. This discovery rewrites the traditional understanding of the anatomy of the human skeletal system.
The implications of this research are vast, particularly regarding the development of new therapies for age-related diseases such as osteoporosis and other degenerative bone conditions. The researchers believe that manipulating this lymphatic network could pave the way for innovative treatments that promote bone regeneration in elderly patients.
