The forces of the European Union intercepted a tanker belonging to the Russian shadow fleet in the Mediterranean Sea. This operation represents another action by the European bloc in combating oil export routes that financially sustain Russia's war against Ukraine.
The shadow fleet is composed of old ships, often with dubious insurance and registrations, used by Russia to circumvent Western sanctions and sell oil in violation of the price caps imposed by the G7 and the EU.
Kaja Kallas, the high representative of European diplomacy, stated that the illegal oil sales carried out by these ships constitute an essential lifeline for the Russian war effort in Ukraine, and declared that the EU will continue to cut them off.
