What does it mean when the pillow turns yellow?

extra31 August 2026 at 15:06

The pillow can turn yellow even with all the hygiene care and use of pillowcases. This happens because it is a natural and slow process, which can occur even in the cleanest homes.

The main cause of yellowing is the skin's natural oils. Even with the pillowcase on top, the skin's grease eventually passes through the fabric of the protection and, over time, with constant contact, the pillow gradually turns yellow.

Besides skin oils, other factors contribute to the problem, such as nighttime sweating, the use of cosmetics applied shortly before bedtime, like moisturizers and hair products, and sleeping with wet hair. Poor ventilation of the pillow can also accelerate the yellowing process.
