Landlords in Portugal will be able to increase house rents by up to 2.56% from January 1, 2027, according to the rapid estimate of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) published by the National Statistics Institute (INE) on August 31. This value represents a slight increase compared to the 2.24% that could be applied to rents in 2026.
August inflation was set at 3.3%, which justifies the increase in the rent limit. The INE explained that the acceleration of the CPI is almost entirely explained by the increase in fuel prices, which has significantly impacted the cost of living.
The index for energy products rose the most, going from 8.7% in the previous month to 12.2% in August. Unprocessed food products also contributed to inflation, registering a variation of 3.4%, although there was a decrease compared to 3.7% in July.
The underlying inflation indicator, which excludes unprocessed food products and energy, stood at 2.7% in August, up 0.1 percentage points compared to July. This data is important to assess the general trend of prices without the volatile influence of fuels and fresh food.
