A pioneering step has been officially taken in the legal protection of nature in Portugal, through the use for the first time of the surface right as a legal tool to ensure that a private property can be destined, forever, to ecological restoration. The first agreement of this type was signed and registered following a collaboration between entities working in the field of nature conservation.
The surface right, which is normally used to allow construction on other people's land, was adapted for a completely different purpose: to ensure that a property remains dedicated to environmental recovery in a perpetual manner. This innovative approach represents an alternative to traditional conservation models, which frequently depend on direct land purchases or ecological easements with limited timeframes.
The signing of this pioneering agreement marks an important precedent for future environmental protection initiatives in Portugal.
