Government harms municipalities due to "lack of decision"

Observador31 August 2026 at 10:26

The mayor of Matosinhos criticized the Portuguese Government for what she considers a "lack of decision" regarding housing, harming the country's municipalities. The municipal council president recalled that the responsibility for building housing lies with the central Government and not with local authorities.

According to the mayor, the country should already have a new housing strategy in practice, after the end of the PRR, the Recovery and Resilience Plan, which has concluded its implementation period. This situation is creating difficulties for municipalities that depend on the central Government's decisions to move forward with housing projects.

The position of the mayor of Matosinhos comes in a context where many municipalities face growing needs for affordable housing, but depend on government programs and funding to implement these solutions.
