Debate: What does Iceland's No to the EU mean?

The Icelanders voted by a narrow majority against joining the European Union. On Saturday, 52.8 percent rejected the resumption of accession negotiations. The social-democratic government initiated the vote hoping that EU membership would offer the country greater protection against territorial claims, such as those made by Trump regarding Greenland. For the opponents, national sovereignty and control of fishing waters took priority.
