Sánchez Only Open to a "Technical Advancement" of General Elections and Insists on His Intention to Run Again

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General31 August 2026 at 09:45

The president of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, maintains his intention to fully comply with the legislation and only shows openness to a "technical advancement" regarding the date of the general elections. This position comes after the possibility of the so-called electoral "super Sunday" was ruled out, meaning not making the general elections coincide with the municipal and regional elections scheduled for May.

During an interview on Cadena Ser, Sánchez avoided giving further clues about his intentions regarding the electoral calendar. However, he expressed disagreement with the arguments of some voices within his party who consider it would be more favorable for the PSOE to go to the polls for municipal and regional elections after the general elections.

The head of the Executive recalled that in the last general elections, the PSOE obtained better results than in the regional elections, thus反驳ing the thesis that it would be preferable to hold the general elections first. This statement was interpreted as a signal that Sánchez does not intend to advance the general elections beyond what is necessary.
