End of "eco-friendly" smartphones! European Union tightens the noose on tech giants

SAPO Notícias30 August 2026 at 18:00

The technology market is preparing for a profound transformation in the way products are presented to the public. The European Union has set the entry into force of Directive 2024/825 for September 27th, marking a new phase in the regulation of the European technology sector.

The directive aims to tighten the noose on tech giants, particularly regarding marketing practices and labeling of products considered "eco-friendly." This legislation represents an effort by the European Union to combat potentially misleading environmental claims by smartphone and other electronic device manufacturers.

The measure comes in a context where many manufacturers have used terms like "green" or "sustainable" in their marketing campaigns, often without concrete evidence to support these claims. With the new directive, companies are expected to be required to provide more detailed and verifiable information about the environmental impact of their products.

An iPhone fell 30 kilometres and landed intact — and earned itself a Guinness World Record

An iPhone protected by a RHINOSHIELD case was launched from the stratosphere at an altitude of 30,607 metres over Sweden, falling 30 kilometres to the ground without any damage. The feat, which took place in the Kiruna area and resulted in the phone's recovery on June 24, earned a Guinness World Records title as the highest fall of a phone protected by a case over natural terrain. The campaign came as part of the company's launch of its AirX product line, which opted for an extreme test rather than conventional drop tests.

Does your phone charger have this symbol? Almost no one knows what it really means

Many users are unaware of the meaning of the number inside a circle of arrows found on phone chargers. This symbol represents the Environment-Friendly Use Period (EFUP), an indication from Chinese standards that refers to the period during which dangerous substances in the equipment should not be released into the environment, not meaning a mandatory "expiration date". The article also warns that, although the charger doesn't technically expire, components such as cables and plugs can degrade over time, and it's important to check for signs of wear such as a burning smell, overheating or physical damage. Other common symbols are also explained, such as the house (indoor use), the crossed-out bin (mandatory recycling) and the square within another square (Class II equipment with double insulation).
