Iceland rejected in a referendum the resumption of negotiations to join the European Union, with 52.8% of voters voting against the proposal. The result represents a clear victory for those in favor of maintaining the country's independence from the European bloc.
The Icelandic Prime Minister, Kristrún Frostadóttir, has already announced that the Government will not proceed with the accession process during the current term. This position comes after the holding of the referendum on the European question in the Nordic country.
The referendum result closes, at least for now, the debate on Iceland's possible integration into the European Union, keeping the country outside the EU bloc.
