Merkel calls to "fight for democracy" against the far-right in Germany

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on the population to stop the advance of the far-right and "fight for democracy" in Germany, in a speech made one week before the regional elections. Merkel, who governed the country between 2005 and 2021, warned of the dangers that extremism represents for the democratic system, at a time when radical right-wing parties are gaining strength in several German states.

Parliament gives the Government two more months to present report on creation of the municipality of Fátima

The Portuguese Parliament approved a bill from Bloco de Esquerda, PAN and Juntos pelo Povo that grants the Government two more months to present a report on the creation of the municipality of Fátima, which intends to become independent from the municipality of Ourém. This is the second postponement of the deadline, which is now extended until the end of 2025. The last municipalities created in Portugal were Odivelas, Trofa and Vizela.

Congressional committee votes on Monday (31st) MP that could zero out the 'blusinhas tax'

The mixed committee of the National Congress votes this Monday (31st) the Provisional Measure that zeros the federal tax on international purchases of up to fifty dollars, the so-called "blusinhas tax". The government is in a hurry, as the text needs to be approved by September 8th, otherwise the 20% charge comes back into effect. The rapporteur, Senator Leila Barros, has already confirmed being favorable to the exemption and presented the final report by 4 PM on Monday. The national productive sector, represented by CNC and CNI, warns that the measure may put up to 109 thousand jobs in Brazil at risk, and the rapporteur received manifestations from the sector to debate the topic.
