RTP Notícias30 August 2026 at 11:50

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on the population to stop the advance of the far-right and "fight for democracy" in Germany, in a speech made one week before the regional elections. Merkel, who governed the country between 2005 and 2021, warned of the dangers that extremism represents for the democratic system, at a time when radical right-wing parties are gaining strength in several German states.

The offensive of Diário do Sousa against the ferry

Diário do Sousa, through its morning newspaper Diário de Notícias, is leading a systematic campaign against the ferry service to Madeira, using partial studies and alarmist headlines to discredit the maritime operation. The article denounces that the only shipowner consulted in a report on the ferry was precisely Grupo Sousa, the owner of the newspaper itself and holder of the monopoly on cargo transport to the Region, while other international shipowners simply "did not respond" or "contact was not possible." The coverage includes biased editorials and invites local political figures for apparent plurality, but always framed to validate the business group's narrative. The author warns that the Madeiran political and social system continues to participate in this media ecosystem, feeding its own vanity, while Mr. Sousa's monopoly remains untouchable and the competition authority sees nothing.

Congressional committee votes on Monday (31st) MP that could zero out the 'blusinhas tax'

The mixed committee of the National Congress votes this Monday (31st) the Provisional Measure that zeros the federal tax on international purchases of up to fifty dollars, the so-called "blusinhas tax". The government is in a hurry, as the text needs to be approved by September 8th, otherwise the 20% charge comes back into effect. The rapporteur, Senator Leila Barros, has already confirmed being favorable to the exemption and presented the final report by 4 PM on Monday. The national productive sector, represented by CNC and CNI, warns that the measure may put up to 109 thousand jobs in Brazil at risk, and the rapporteur received manifestations from the sector to debate the topic.
