Icelanders rejected the reopening of negotiations for accession to the European Union, according to the final results of the referendum held on Saturday. The "no" won with 52.8% of the votes, against 47.2% who voted "yes" to the question of whether Iceland should reopen negotiations with the EU.

The final results were released by Icelandic public television RÚV, after counting all ballots. The outcome of the process was announced this Sunday, confirming that accession to the European Union is once again off the Icelandic agenda.

Iceland had formally initiated the process of accession to the European Union, but the negotiations were interrupted and the country decided to submit the question to a popular referendum to decide the future of these talks.
