The "Serrenhas" are characters created by the São Brás de Alportel Museum Club, a group that uses theatre, marches, parades and the recreation of traditions to bring the museum to the street and keep stories of times past alive. At the Serra Fair, the challenge was to bring the mountain to the centre of the village, and the "Serrenhas" appeared with their products, costumes, ways of speaking and small stories of an everyday life in which selling local produce could be an adventure.
Madalena Neves was one of the participants who brought the initiative to life, taking with her carob pods and recreating the picking and selling of local produce, as well as "alcagoitas", the name by which peanuts were known in the past. For Madalena, these recreations are fun, but also have a greater purpose of connecting to the past.
The idea came up almost spontaneously, when the City Council challenged them to adapt an activity that the group was already developing. Filomena Mendonça, one of those responsible for the group, explained that the Serrenhas came to the village because that was precisely the theme of the Serra Fair.
The Museum Club brings together retired people, but also participants of different ages and backgrounds, united by their love for cultural activities. Throughout the year, the group is involved in popular marches, parades, theatre, traditional music and other initiatives. Filomena Mendonça has worked at the Costume Museum for about 30 years and has been following the development of this cultural dynamic in the community.
