A quantity of gold valued at approximately 9 million euros was discovered in Bruges, Belgium. The discovery was made in a house built in 1899 by the Van Asse family, a wealthy family from that Flemish city.
Historian and former Mayor Piet Buysse put forward a theory about the origin of the treasure. According to the specialist, the gold likely belonged to the former residents of the house, who hid it in the property as a way to protect their wealth.
The economic crisis of the 1930s may be the origin of this hiding place. Faced with the financial instability of that period, many wealthy families chose to hide their most precious belongings to avoid losses or confiscations.
