The regulation of Portugal's first statelessness statute will begin in September, more than a year after the law came into force. The legislation was approved in 2023 through an initiative by the Livre party, but it was never regulated during the term of the previous socialist government, whose fall interrupted the process.
The 2023 law established a legal framework to recognize and protect stateless citizens in Portugal, but its practical implementation depended on regulations that were never approved. With the beginning of regulation in September, the process can finally advance toward the realization of the rights provided for in the statute.
