Everything is the same thing

Jornal do Algarve29 August 2026 at 18:06

The article addresses the growing vocabulary and cultural impoverishment of society, illustrating with a situation witnessed during a card game. An eight-year-old child called a dolphin a "flamingo," and when corrected by an adult, insisted they were "the same thing" because they were both "animals." The article uses this episode to illustrate a broader problem of ignorance and disinterest in distinguishing and naming things.

The author cites Irene Vallejo, who states that those who read can better express their ideas, translate emotions into words, and verbalize the learning process. Gregorio Luri is also cited, affirming that reading, writing, and speaking are united, and that school failure is fundamentally a linguistic failure.

The text compares contemporary society to "smartphone-addicted australopithecines," a drug that is difficult to combat precisely because of its usefulness. The phenomenon of "it's the same thing" has already spread through secondary education, fueled by a lack of curiosity and a closure into narcissism and certainties born of ignorance.

To reinforce the argument, the author recounts how a supermarket worker could not identify ginger, asking if it was an "eggplant." The article concludes with a provocation: whether even footballers like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi would be considered "the same thing" for being both "players."
