Recreation of the Siege of Almeida continues tonight and tomorrow

The fortress of Almeida is, this weekend, the backdrop for the historical recreation of the siege of the old fortified town by General Massena's troops during the third French Invasion of Portugal, in 1810. The event continues tonight and tomorrow, recreating one of the most significant moments in Portuguese military history.

The recreation commemorates the capitulation of this bastioned border fortress, which occurred on August 28, 1810. Built in the 17th and 18th centuries, the fortress of Almeida was an important fortified town located on the Portuguese border.

The siege is set in the context of the third French Invasion of Portugal, during the Napoleonic Wars, when French troops commanded by Marshal André Massena attempted to conquer Portuguese territory.

Marvão Castle secured passage to the national semifinal of the New 7 Wonders of Portugal after winning the regional final dedicated to Alentejo and Ribatejo, held at Jardim das Portas do Sol in Santarém. Classified as a National Monument since 1922, the castle stands out for the preservation of its authenticity and its unique relationship with the surrounding landscape.
