Nepal warns of new flood: river blocked by debris forms lake at risk of bursting

Nepalese authorities issued an alert after the formation of a debris lake that blocked a river in the Melamchi region, northeast of Kathmandu. The artificial lake has already reached the size equivalent to about 15 football fields and continues to rise, representing a significant risk of rupture that could cause a devastating flood in the downstream villages. Emergency teams are on maximum alert and preventive evacuation orders have been issued for nearby communities.
