The Odeleite Dam in the municipality of Castro Marim, in the inland Algarve, became known as the "Blue Dragon River" after an aerial photograph published in 2015 revealed that its reservoir draws a shape similar to that of a blue dragon. This perspective is not visible from the banks, being only perceptible when observed from the air, through the sinuous curves formed by the water over the landscape.
The visual similarity sparked particular interest in China, where the dragon is a symbol associated with power, strength and good luck, having also been a figure used by emperors throughout history. This cultural connection explains the international visibility the location achieved after the image was shared, becoming a reference point on social media and among Chinese visitors.
The dam was built on the Ribeira de Odeleite, a watercourse that originates in the higher areas of the Serra do Caldeirão and flows into the Guadiana River. The dragon shape corresponds exclusively to the reservoir created by the hydraulic infrastructure, and not to a river with that name, although the expression "Blue Dragon River" has overridden the usual geographic identification of the site.
Near the dam is the village of Odeleite, which includes the Matriz Church built in 1534, archaeological remains from the Roman period and various water and wind mills. The area offers conditions for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, boat trips and water sports, with the "blue dragon" image being the most distinctive feature of this zone in the Algarve.
