Judge Dies After Sacrificing Herself Against Swarm of Bees to Save 3-Year-Old Son

extra15 September 2026 at 13:57

Mexican judge Oyuki Ramírez Burciaga, 45, died after spending nine days hospitalized in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit due to a bee swarm attack. She had assumed the magistrate position only seven months prior. The tragedy occurred at the entrance of the Guadalupe Sports Unit complex in Zacatecas, Mexico, during a sporting event that gathered several families.

Upon realizing the insects were advancing on the crowd, Oyuki reacted instinctively to protect her son Matias, who was just 3 years old. According to witness accounts, the mother removed her own jacket, covered the boy, and placed him safely inside the family car. This action, however, left her completely exposed to the swarm.

The attack left at least 11 people injured in addition to the magistrate. Oyuki was hospitalized in critical condition and remained in the ICU for nine days until she succumbed to her injuries. The case, which occurred in May, only gained international media attention now.

Why this matters

This case affects the Mexican legal community and draws attention to the risks of bee attacks in public spaces, in addition to highlighting the maternal sacrifice that generated international commotion. There is no direct indication of impact on readers from other regions beyond the Mexican context.
