The former President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stated this Monday that Portuguese people are seen abroad as a safe and reliable people, emphasizing that the current global geopolitical and economic context has favored Portugal's attractiveness and stability. The statements were made at the University of Aveiro, during a conversation with writer Gonçalo M. Tavares, at an event that was part of a series of traveling conferences promoted by Caixa Geral de Depósitos.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa highlighted the positive view that international observers and investors maintain about the national reality, noting that the perception of security translates into concrete economic impact. The former head of State shared his experience after leaving his position as President of the Republic, mentioning that he frequently hears, during international travels, people who come to Portugal to decide and invest in projects.
When asked about the major social and technological challenges he would like to see addressed by the end of the century, the former President pointed to the urgency of regulating the accelerated advancement of Artificial Intelligence, advocating for a rigorous ethical response and the involvement of human sciences specialists. He insisted that Europe must take the lead in the debate on the limits and control of these tools.
