Trucks outside the VCI: "The measure is good, but there was no need to invent a platform"

TVI Notícias15 September 2026 at 09:52

From this Tuesday onwards, trucks can no longer circulate on the VCI (Via de Cintura Interna) between 07:00 and 21:00. This restriction applies except when heavy vehicles are destined for supplying Porto and Gaia.

The measure aims to reduce truck traffic on a road that is one of the most heavily traveled in the region. The circulation of heavy vehicles has been a constant concern on the urban highways of the northern area of the country.

Gonçalo Lobo Xavier, secretary-general of the Distribution Companies Association, comments on the measure. In his view, the restriction is positive, although he considers that it would not have been necessary to create a specific platform to implement this decision.

This change comes in a context of growing concern with traffic fluidity and road safety in the Porto region, where the VCI is a fundamental route for urban mobility.

Why this matters

This measure directly affects distribution companies operating in the Greater Porto area, forcing them to replan routes and delivery schedules. Consumers may feel impacts on supply deadlines for stores and services in the region. The business sector's criticism of the absence of alternatives indicates that implementation may generate practical problems that require monitoring.
