The two energy storage auctions promised by the Government will be delayed. The application phase, which was supposed to start this Monday, September 14th, will only be launched within three to four weeks, according to the Minister of Environment and Energy, Graça Carvalho. The competitions are thus postponed to October.
The two auctions are intended for battery energy storage projects. This is a measure by the Executive to reinforce Portugal's electricity storage capacity, a sector considered strategic for the energy transition and for the stability of the national grid.
Minister Graça Carvalho was responsible for announcing the new schedule for the competitions, implicitly acknowledging that the initial deadline would not be met. The postponement comes at a time when the country is seeking to accelerate the integration of renewable energy into the electrical grid.
Battery storage allows energy generated by renewable sources, such as solar and wind, to be stored for use during periods of higher demand or when renewable production is reduced. Portugal has been investing in strengthening this technology as a way to guarantee electricity supply and reduce dependence on non-renewable sources.
