Retail sales in China grew only 0.4% in August, representing the slowest pace since the start of the economic recovery. This data marks the second consecutive monthly slowdown, highlighting the challenges the country faces in recovering domestic consumption.
The weak retail trade performance contrasts with the positive evolution of industrial production, which accelerated during the same period. This divergence suggests that industrial growth has not translated into a corresponding boost in household consumption.
The results indicate that the measures implemented by Beijing to revive the economy have not achieved the desired effect in stimulating consumption. The Chinese economy continues to face significant challenges in transitioning to a more balanced model dependent on domestic consumption.
