Heavy vehicles without destination to Porto or Gaia prohibited on VCI from today

Correio da Manhã15 September 2026 at 07:35

From today, heavy vehicles without destination to Porto or Vila Nova de Gaia are prohibited from circulating on the Inner Beltway (VCI). The measure aims to relieve traffic on one of the busiest arteries of the region.

The prohibition specifically applies to goods vehicles that have a gross weight exceeding 3,500 kilograms, three or more axles and height equal to or greater than 1.1 meters. These vehicles will have to find alternative routes to reach their destinations.

The VCI is a crucial road in the Metropolitan Area of Porto, frequently subject to high levels of congestion. This restriction comes as an attempt to improve the circulation conditions on this road.

Why this matters

Drivers of heavy vehicles that cross the Porto region will be directly affected, needing to use alternative itineraries. The measure aims to reduce congestion on the VCI, benefiting the remaining users of this urban road. This restriction follows the need to improve traffic fluidity in the Porto metropolitan area.
