Brazilian missing in Italy: husband killed in boat collision lost uncle 18 years ago in similar accident

oglobo15 September 2026 at 07:00

Sean Michieli, 25, died after colliding with a water taxi in the early hours of last Saturday (12), in the Tessera canal, near Marco Polo Airport, in Venice, Italy. His wife, Brazilian Gabriella Querino Elorriaga, 25, remains missing. The couple had left Burano island, where they lived, heading to San Giuliano, on the mainland. The search in the lagoon resumed this Monday.

Sean's family had already faced a similar tragedy nearly 19 years ago. On October 26, 2007, Endrius Michieli, Sean's uncle, died at age 19 in a boat accident in the Fondamente Nuove area, in Venice.

The Public Prosecutor's Office in Venice is investigating the driver of the water taxi involved in the collision. Italian authorities continue the search efforts for the missing Brazilian, which have already entered their fourth day.

Why this matters

The disappearance of a Brazilian in Italy directly affects the Portuguese-Brazilian community in the region and raises questions about nautical safety in Venice, especially after a second family tragedy related to water accidents in the same area.
