Maria is a mother of five daughters who lives in Spain and revealed to the newspaper El Español how much her family, composed of seven people, spends annually on food. According to her calculations, the amount exceeds 8,000 euros per year, which corresponds to more than 666 euros per month in food expenses.
Among the examples Maria gave to illustrate the scale of shopping required, milk consumption stands out. Approximately two liters of milk are consumed daily at home, which represents about 60 liters in a month and more than 700 liters over a year. Milk is just one of many products that disappear quickly in a household with seven people.
Doing the math, the family spends an average of about 22 euros per day on food, which is equivalent to just over three euros per person per day. Maria mentions that organizing shopping is an essential task to control expenses, since small price differences gain weight when multiplied by several people and frequent purchases.
The case occurs in Spain, so the values presented reflect the reality of that country and may differ significantly from other markets. Nevertheless, the testimony allows us to understand the impact that food costs can have on the budget of large families, where daily expenses turn into thousands of euros at the end of a year.
